What you need to know about Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in our community is going to happen. It is a matter of when and not if we will see our first cases diagnosed. This disease is going to have an impact on all of our lives and we need to be prepared for it. We will do our best to keep you updated on both general guidance on Coronavirus Disease 2019 and what is happening in our local community.

First, everyone needs to have a basic understanding of the virus, how it spreads, and what symptoms it causes. The CDC has a good summary of it here. The most common symptoms are fever, cough, and shortness of breath. These symptoms can also be caused by a number of other viral infections and bacterial pneumonia. The only way to confirm the actual cause is to test for COVID-19 as well as for other alternative conditions. Unfortunately, at the time this is being written the access to COVID-19 testing is still very limited.

As the virus becomes more widespread it will become increasingly important to know what to do if you believe you may be infected or are confirmed to be infected. The CDC has another good summary of what to do if you are sick here.
